Can I recover a lost API key?

No — a lost API key can't be recovered by anyone, including Sophiie staff. The fix is quick though: use Regenerate on the key at Settings → Workspace → API token and you'll get a working replacement in one step.

Why keys can't be recovered

Your API key is shown in full exactly once — in a one-time dialog when it's first created (and again when you regenerate it). After that, the list at Settings → Workspace → API token shows only the first few characters followed by dots.

Sophiie never stores your key — not even a scrambled copy of it. Keys are held by a dedicated key service that can check whether a key is valid but can never read it back; the full key is shown once at creation and that's it. That's exactly why nobody at Sophiie can look one up for you either.

Steps

If you've lost your key:

  1. Go to Settings → Workspace → API token.
  2. Open the ⋯ menu on the key and choose Regenerate.
  3. Confirm — the old key stops working immediately.
  4. Copy the new key from the one-time dialog. This is your only chance to see it, so store it somewhere safe straight away.
  5. Update your integrations with the new key.

Regenerate deletes the old key and issues a new one under the same name, so it doesn't cost you a slot — organisations can hold a maximum of 2 API keys, and at that cap the Generate new key button is disabled.

If you think a key has been compromised

You have three options on the key's ⋯ menu, from mildest to most final:

  • Disable — turns the key off immediately, and you can enable it again later.
  • Regenerate — kills the old secret and hands you a replacement under the same name, keeping your slot against the 2-key cap.
  • Revoke — permanent. It can't be undone, so use it only for keys you'll never need again.

Security recommendations

  • Save your key in a secure location immediately after generating it.
  • Use environment variables or a secret manager to store keys — never hard-code them.
  • Never commit API keys to version control or share them in plain text.
  • Regenerate keys regularly as a security habit.

Common Questions

Why is the Generate new key button greyed out?

You're at the cap of 2 API keys per organisation — you'll see a banner saying so. Regenerate an existing key instead, or revoke one you no longer use to free the slot.

Why can't I see any of these controls?

Only organisation owners and admins can create, regenerate, disable or revoke keys — other team members see an information banner telling them to contact their admin. API keys are also a paid feature — they're part of our paid plans and aren't available on Free. If you're not sure whether your plan includes them, ask Sophiie Assistant in your dashboard.

Can support look up my key for me?

No. Nobody at Sophiie can see or recover a key — we never hold it. Regenerating the key yourself is always the answer to a lost key.
